Small changes can make a big difference in promoting and teaching students about healthy living. The following are suggestions for ways to improve student health at your school:
Practice what you preach. Have faculty and staff model promote a healthy environment for students, including healthy eating habits and lifestyles.
Incorporate health and wellness into your school curriculum. Replace fundraising and other activities that give rewards for food with activities that promote health. Provide health promotion activity workbooks and programs for students.
Educate and involve parents. Inform parents about initiatives at your school to improve student health and encourage them to get involved. Include health promotion strategies and stories in your school's newsletter.
Take a stand. Prohibit students from bringing and consuming unhealthy beverages and foods (e.g. hot chips) at school.
Collaborate with community groups, hospitals, and other agencies. Many organizations have free health programs, resources, and educational materials available for schools. If you would like to bring free health programs to your school, visit our Service Matching Initiative.
